This painting started with sculpting the tree with a palette knife and layers of thick textural medium. Layering earthy rust right over moody blues gives the trunk actual physical weight, making the bark pop dimensionally with that punchy yellow background. Indigo Noon was a lot of fun to paint from building up the medium to letting the vibrant colors fight it out.

It's hard not to be inspired by nature. I'm always looking for that next scene to paint, noticing how a place makes me feel, looking at light and shadow, taking photos, and capturing that feeling on the canvas. And, of course, always seeing everything in full, vibrant color.
