A grove of trees on a campus near Green Lake in northwestern Michigan sparked North by Northwestish. Set against a warm coral sky, a front-and-center tree spreads its branches wide, mimicking a classic trail sign that points toward possibilities all around. Running an electric strip of magenta across the middle breaks up the landscape alongside fresh green ground and purple shadows, giving the whole scene an energizing lift full of light and curiosity. I painted the study for this piece in a much smaller format en plein air and it was fun to see it come together in this much larger format.

It's hard not to be inspired by nature. I'm always looking for that next scene to paint, noticing how a place makes me feel, looking at light and shadow, taking photos, and capturing that feeling on the canvas. And, of course, always seeing everything in full, vibrant color.
